Today, the breed is recognized for exhibition, and is fairly common in the poultry world. That belief is justified: recent studies have discovered that the Silkie produces more carnosine, an important anti-oxidant, than other poultry. The first western account of the breed comes from Marco Polo, who mentioned chickens with fur-like plumage in his Asian travelogues in the 13th century. There's a great deal of information about the Silkie in ancient Chinese writings -eastern cultures have always believed the Silkie to have medicinal powers beyond any other chicken breed. Silkies most likely originated in China, but Southeast Asia is also sometimes proposed. Though they are fair layers themselves, laying about three eggs a week, they are commonly used to hatch eggs from other breeds. Hens are also exceptionally broody, and make good mothers. ![]() Among the most docile of poultry, Silkies are considered an ideal pet. In addition to their distinctive physical characteristics, Silkies are well known for their calm, friendly temperament. They are often exhibited in poultry shows they are a small bantam size chicken and come in several colors: Black, Blue, Buff, Gray, Partridge, Splash, White, and rarer colors such as Cuckoo (with variations), Red, and Lavender, Porcelain, Tortoiseshell, Isabel and European Paint. ![]() The breed has several other unusual qualities, such as dark blue flesh and bones, blue earlobes, and five toes on each foot (most chickens only have four). The exact location where they were found is not known. The Silkie are a breed of chicken named for its typically fluffy plumage, which is said to feel like silk. The Silkie is originates from Asia, most believe China or Japan while others favor India.
